Here you will find some of the Plucker projects I'm working on. This list is by-no-means exhaustive, and all of the projects listed here are in varying degrees of completion and complexity (with the Wikipedia project being far and away, the largest to date!).

Why are you doing these things?
"I believe in the Plucker project. I've supported it for 8-9 years now in code, CVS hosting, website hosting and other pieces where I could help. I want to be able to provide other people access to materials to read and learn from when they are WAY offline, with no power for miles and miles."

Learning in Hand: Using Plucker in Education

November 2nd, 2007 desrod Posted in News No Comments »

I found this blog entry at Learning in Hand that describes how two schools in USVI are using Palm handheld devices for student use. Seventh graders at Moravian School are working on a St. Thomas episode their “Our City Podcast“. One of the tools they’re using to leverage this goal is Plucker!

The handheld are configured and installed with many packages, including Plucker.

The teachers have created simple HTML documents that link to the various Wikipedia entries for each of their “Our City” episodes.

They then used Plucker on their desktop machines to convert that into a Plucker document that can be used on the Plucker Viewer (or alternatively FlingIt) on the handhelds.

Some of the limitations of the handhelds (lack of Wi-Fi) prohibit them from just viewing Wikipedia directly, but having an offline, portable version (in my opinion) has a lot of additional benefits.

Another part of the assignment for students was to find a fact about a city that was left out of that city’s episode. Students also looked for any differently-reported facts between the podcast and the Wikipedia articles. If there is a difference, it’s an opportunity to explore which source is correct.

Read more on the original blog entry.

It’s a great example of how students and other people are using Plucker every day.

Plucker Email Reflector (pler)

July 15th, 2007 desrod Posted in News No Comments »

Several years ago around 2002, I wrote a Perl-based tool to allow users who wanted to “test-drive” Plucker without having to install anything on their machines. It works entirely through email!

The side benefit of an email-only interface to Plucker is that it also fits the needs of:

  1. Those who have a platform that doesn’t support Plucker, such as Amiga or OS/2
  2. Those who may be behind restrictive firewalls that prohibit spidering or fetching content
  3. Those who are on the road, and want to receive Plucker documents while away from home
  4. Anyone who has had trouble installing Plucker on their machine for any reason

Enter Pler, the Plucker Email Reflector!

Google News in Plucker format (generated daily)

August 10th, 2005 desrod Posted in E-Books, News No Comments »

I’ve also been playing with converting Google News into Plucker format. The screenshots below were taken with ScreenShot from LinkeSoft, by Andreas Linke and pulled from my Palm with read-screenshot, a conduit that is part of the pilot-link project, which I maintain.
